Trending Now: Tortoise Shell Hair

In 2014, there was Ombre and Bronde, in 2015, it’s all about the tortoise shell look. Ecaille (French for tortoise shell) is a more mature, softer and subtle version of it’s previous on-trend colours we saw last year.

Senior Colourist Jaclyn Smith says: “Ecaille is a healthy and glossy update for ombre fans of those who felt it was too stark for their style. Ecaille gives hair a soft, multi-tonal look without any harsh lines to compliment your natural tones.”

With it’s smooth caramel tones, the Ecaille technique is a slightly richer and darker version of your natural colour paired with golden highlights and lots of gorgeous shine. It tends to also be darker at the roots and lighter at the ends. It’s definitely a much more sophisticated version of the ombre we know and love. Pop some balayage highlights on top of this rich shade, and you’ve got this multidimensional, bombshell look.

So when you’re going into the salon to get this look, ask for various tones, deeper at the root, that are in keeping with your natural colour. Then request it slightly lighter at the ends, but remember to say it’s not the ombre look you’re going for, but more natural, sun kissed hair!
