8 Reasons Why HIIT Is The Best Way To Get Fit

Want to look amazing in that LBD over Christmas? Or get a head start on your New Year’s fitness plan? High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) could be the answer. It doesn’t take long, it’s free and it really works.

What is it?

HIIT involves short periods of intense exercise (think 30-45 sec) with less intense recovery periods (10 sec). Total workouts can be as short as 20min but are still effective.

We asked Sarah O’Meara a personal trainer (PT) from Clayton Hotel Liffey Valley why HIIT training is the best way to get fit whether you are a complete beginner or already on your journey to fitness:

1. It’s Efficient

HIIT training is perfect for busy working people as well as people who just don’t want to spend hours working out. It can be done anywhere and only takes 15-20 minutes a day. While making time to go to the gym can be a struggle, a HIIT session can be done at home.

2. Burn More Calories

A 10 minute HIIT session can burn more calories than a 30 minute jog on a treadmill. With an increased heart rate, your body continues to burn calories after your session. Sarah highlights this benefit “HIIT is the perfect way to get fit because you’ll burn more calories in less time”.

3. Healthier Heart

HIIT improves your cardiovascular health by rapidly increasing your heart rate during training. To get the cardiac boost from a HIIT, you will have push yourself close to your limits. Three 20 minute sessions a week are proven to improve your cardiovascular fitness.

4. It’s Free

A huge benefit to HIIT is that it is completely free and there is no need for equipment. Sprints, burpees, high knees, air squats require nothing but your own body weight.

5. Higher Metabolism

It’s proven that HIIT increases levels of human growth hormone (HGH) in the 24 hours after you complete your workout leading to an increased metabolism.

6. Tailored Workout

An extremely versatile form of training, HIIT allows you to choose the certain body parts you want to improve and you can target them with specific exercises.

7. Lose weight, Add Muscle

“You’ll build lean muscle and will boost your metabolism at rest”. Sarah adds. This form of exercise encourages your body to hold and preserve lean muscle mass while burning off the undesired excess fat.

8. It’s Challenging

The name doesn’t lie, high intensity interval training isn’t easy but the rewards are great for such a cheap, efficient and versatile form of exercising. The confidence that it can provide will benefit your health but also your everyday life.
