5 Minutes With: The Velveteen Rabbit
The Velveteen Rabbit is the creation by Dublin born Zoe Carney. She has curated a wonderful collection of antique, up-cycled and vintage inspired pieces available for sale and hire. We caught up with her to hear about how this store came about and where she finds all these amazing things!
1. Where does your love of all things antique and vintage come from?
My love goes back as far as I can remember. My mother Eithne has a huge part to play for my love of vintage and eclectic interiors. We spent many a happy day exploring markets here and abroad as a child, this continued as I grew up. My happy place is rummaging through antique shops, charity shops or stalls at flea markets.
2. How did the Velveteen Rabbit come about?
I had worked in many facets of the fashion industry from design, retail and personal shopping for a long time and needed to take a different path, this seemed like the natural progression. I wanted to showcase my love of finding the unusual, rare, original and just plain ol’ pretty, wrapped up in a one stop shop; ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’.
3. Where do you find the pieces you sell?
Every piece that is vintage or antique has a lovely tale or journey to tell. I have pieces from all over the globe including India, Belgium, France, Hungry, Sweden and of course Ireland. I also buy new pieces which match the ethos and narrative of the brand.
4. What is the oldest item you have for sale right now?
The oldest pieces I think are some gustavian Swedish tables both dating back to the late 1800s.
5. What is it about pre-loved furniture that is so special?
It can be anything from design to craftsmanship or just its journey to the present day. For instance, I have some Hungarian printers drawers that was actually used in a botanical seed shop in Budapest before I bought it, so it had a long life and that is fascinating to me!
6. What’s your favourite piece in the collection?
I couldn’t possibly pick a favourite, but I am stocking these gorgeous stone sculptors at the moment and I’m in love with the Lurcher dog.
7. What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into antiques?
Im still figuring it all out myself but if i had to give some advice it would be..buy what you love!
