5 Minutes With: Scout

Scout is a gorgeous little shop that sits in Temple Bars Cow’s Lane and is stocked with beautiful and unique homeware and fashion pieces. We popped by and caught up with the owner Wendy Crawford (it’s like stepping into her living room) to hear all about running this stylish store.

1. How did Scout happen?

I finished up in Powerscourt after 5 years & really I needed more space & an exterior street presence in order to grow my business so I decided it was time to make the leap!

2. Where do you get your interior inspiration?

I like design blogs like Design Sponge & This is my future House but I’m mostly inspired by regular trips to flea markets & charity shops! I shy away from plain white backdrops & always have so I tend to be motivated by dark earthy tones for paint colours which I think created a great backdrop for all my finds.

3. Who’s your favourite Irish designer whether in fashion or interiors?

I have to say Petria Lenehan is my favourite designer in clothing. Her eye for fabric & shape is exquisite.  In interiors I love the brand wood work by Snug & Arran Street East pottery.

4. Where is your favourite place to source products from?

I know it’s a cliche but more and more I love finding Irish designers. There’s immense satisfaction in finding something local & beautifully crafted. I find they are easy to sell as you’re so proud of where they’re from. Irish design stacks up so well with it’s international counterparts. If I’d a second choice I like French design. Again because it can be so simple & made with great fabrics & materials.

5. What attracts you to vintage pieces?

I’ve kind of moved away from it in the shop in terms of clothing, although when I find great pieces I’ll always bring them in! I’ll never tire of vintage in interiors, the quality of how it was made is a big appeal.

6. Who would you say is Scouts typical customer?

We have quite a wide demographic. Mostly it’s guys & girls who appreciate good design combined with quality. They know they are investing in their wardrobes & homes & probably aren’t the type who constantly buy. They value a good quality piece that will work hard & for a long time.

7. What’s your favourite piece in the store right now?

A pair of black cotton YMC culottes & the YMC sailor top!

8. What’s next for Scout?

Menswear. We will slowly add more pieces and clothing in for the man folk! We have on the way grensons for guys and also our French label Armor Lux will have some pieces. We will slowly build it up so by AW15 there’s a strong mens department in store. It will take time to develop but slow & steady is fine by me!

Scout is located at 5 Smock Alley Court, Essex Street West, Dublin 8. You can also shop online at scoutdublin.com.
